Calories, Condition & Activity Level

Calories - How Much Do I Feed My Lhasa Apso?
We'll provide examples of two of our preferred brands below.  For other brands you'll want to discover what is best for your Lhasa to retain a healthy structure.  Sometimes what's on the bag is not best for your dog's activity level.

A good starting calorie count per day for a Lhasa Apso puppy with average size adult parents, is about 450 calories.  This would be fed in two or three meals per day and slowly tapered to one or two meals per day as an adult.

We recommend contacting your Breeder or your Veterinarian for the best diet advice!

Note:  When training a dog (where you may be treating often), be sure to never treat more than 10% of their daily calorie allowance.  Most small dog treats are about 2 calories each.  Read the label and treat sparingly.  Dogs in training do not have to eat a treat at every reward and can be rewarded with praise also, such as  "Good job!".

Puppy Raw Food

We like BJ's Premium Puppy Blend when feeding puppies.  Hopefully you've found out what your breeder has been feeding your puppy and have some on hand.  If you got your puppy from us this is what you'll be sent home with.  It is best not to change a diet for the first two weeks of bringing your puppy home since they'll be going through many stressful changes at first and a change in diet should not be one of those things.

Of course you can change his food if you want.  We just recommend you choose one formulated for puppies and the highest value food you can afford.  Be sure to phase out old food while phasing in the new, for gentle transitioning on tiny tummies.  Over the course of 10 days you can adjust out 10% per day and replace with a food of your choice.  Please do not do so until after the first two weeks.  Your new puppy is adjusting to many new things and a new diet should not be one of those things.

BJ's Puppy Raw Feeding Schedule & Amounts

For best results, develop a regular feeding schedule such as three small meals a day for younger puppies. You can gradually reduce to one feeding in the morning and one in the evening as your puppy ages. The routine should not vary. As puppies near adulthood (12-18 mo. for Lhasas), their calorie needs may drop, and your puppy may begin leaving some food in the bowl. Don’t misinterpret this as an indication of dislike for the food. Instead, begin offering less so your puppy doesn’t overeat and stays in ideal body condition.

The below table is based on feeding BJ's Raw Premium Puppy Blend.

Lhasa Apso 1½ - 3 months 4 - 5 months 6 - 8 months 9 - 11 months 12 - 18 months
Expected Adult Size (cups) (cups) (cups) (cups) (cups)
Average (Under 13 lb.) ¼ to ½ ¼ to ½ ½ to ⅔ ⅔ to 1 1
Larger (Over 13 lb.) ¼ to ½ ⅓ to ⅔ ½ to ⅔ ⅔ to 1 1

Keep in mind that some dogs need more, and some dogs need less.  Activity will play a major part in how much fuel is required for your dog.  BJ's carries a fantastic adult blend of premium mix which can be fed to puppies as well as adults.  The benefit to the puppy blend is a more finer grind and added goat milk.

For very young (2 mo.) puppy feed 3 times a day (a little less than ⅛ cup each) and over the next 2 months reduce from 3 to 2 feedings (morning and night). Just start pushing food out of one feeding and add to the others until it's a regular 2 feedings (a little more than a ¼ cup each). Then as they near adulthood (12-18 mo.) start transitioning the two meals to just one at night.

Again, as the dog grows he will show you how much to move to his evening meal by leaving it in his morning bowl. Don't mistake this for a sign of disliking his food! Just feed the lesser amount in the next morning meal and more in the night meal. This is how best to adjust to one meal nightly.
